Rachel says that Leilani Napana was the most beautiful woman she ever knew. Leilani, also known as Lani, arrived at Kalaupapa while she was in her twenties, and that the two soon became close friends. Lani is later assaulted by a man at a party, after which, Rachel learns that Lani was born a man but always dreamed of being a woman. Rachel accepts Lani for who she is, and they remain close friends for the rest of Lani's life.
