Laura portrays her parents as being loving and supportive, though, admittedly bewildered by their daughter's behavior. Laura's diary describes them in an idealistic fashion, in which, they are placed on a pedestal. Laura strives to reach the top of that pedestal herself, but ultimately comes to view herself as unable to do so. This view subsequently feeds into her lack of self worth, and in turn, feeds her self-destructiveness, plunging her into an endless cycle of self-hate.
