Who is Larry Grape from What's Eating Gilbert Grape? and what is their importance?

Larry is Gilbert's brother. He is eight years older than Gilbert and only visits the Gilbert home once a year for his mother's birthday. Larry is, however, generous with his family and sends them money each month. He does so anonymously.
