King Alfred of England remains one of England's most beloved kings. He was the youngest of three sons, and he demonstrated from an early age, that he was the most noble, handsome, kind, and intelligent of his siblings. Although he doesn't learn to read until he is twelve-years-old, Alfred embraced learning from an early age. Over the course of his life, he continued study, translate, and write, even while he was king. As king, he worked to reform education, encouraging schools to teach Latin to the children of commoners, and translating Latin texts into English, so that people could use them. He also created a system for writing such prose in the vernacular English.
Before ascending to the throne, Alfred served and fought alongside his brother King Ethelred. The two had an agreement to take care of each other's children in the future if one were unable to do so. Alfred was a valiant fighter, and it was apparent that neither he nor Ethelred were competitive about either the throne or the wealth that came with it. Alfred defended his kingdom against the Viking invaders and was a devout Christian, championing the cause of the Church. He was survived by two sons and three daughters.
