Kenjii is Maya's faithful companion, her dog. Kenjii is important in the novel, because she is constantly protecting Maya whenever possible. Kenjii acts as a pillow, blanket, protector, and all around friend in the novel. Kenjii is one of the only creatures Maya can openly trust, and she would do anything to protect her, as well. Kenjii attacks a cougar to save Maya, and is eventually even shot by the St. Clouds when she attempts to attack a man who is about to harm Maya. Although it is only a tranquilizer dart, Maya is forced to leave Kenjii behind and she hopes that they will not harm her.
