Kaitlin Malone from Scribbler of Dreams has had a rough year. Her father was imprisoned for killing Robert Crutchfield and she had to leave her private school to go to a public school. The Crutchfields and the Malones have historically never gotten along, including a generations old blood feud that seems to be barely suppressed. It is because of this that Kaitlin changes her last name to Hampton so that no one will know that she's one of 'those' people. She meets and falls for a Crutchfield boy, who admitedly hates the Malones. He doesn't know that she's a Malone. Kaitlin discovers that Rick, a foreman with the Malones has been working for the Crutchfields has planned to poison their crops and he is fired .At a party he tells Bram who Kaitlin really is and what her last name is. Bram refuses to speak to Kaitlin any longer, but in the end, he realizes that the feud is stupid and admists that he is still in love with her.
