Julie Lewis is Stephen's wife. After her daughter's kidnapping, Julie seems to blame Stephen, though she never comes out and says it. Unlike Stephen, Julie draws into herself after Kate's disappearance, while her husband spends all of his time searching for their child. Julie later moves to the country in order to come to grips with what has happened. In one way..... the move is an escape; in another way, it is a search for solitude and healing. Toward the end of the novel, Julie calls Stephen to tell him that she is in labor...... she'd conceived during a visit with Stephen months earlier. Julie admits that she initially regretted the pregnancy, but that it had ultimately come to be her salvation. Stephen is present at the birth of their child.
