Who is Joseph Allston from All the Little Live Things and what is their importance?

Joseph Allston, or Joe, is the main character in the novel, All the Little Live Things. Joe is a retired book editor from Manhattan. He and his wife have retired to the countryside in California in order to find some peace and quiet after the death of their only child, Curtis.
