John Marcher is a character in the story, The Beast in the Jungle. He is described as a tall, well-born gentleman with a small inheritance. He is employed in a government office in London, and his life is dominated by the belief that he is special.... that he will experience some great event. Marcher avoids falling in love, marrying and having children because he is waiting for this special event..... an event that never occurs.
