Jake is the final major character in this novel. Jake and Roland have met before in another novel where Roland apparently let the boy fall into a mountain chasm resulting in his death. Roland has a conflicting memory of whether he killed Jake or not. Jake, meanwhile, also has a conflicting memory of whether or not he is really alive. Jake follows the guidance of ka to the former lot of Tom and Gerry's Artistic Deli where he finds the key and the rose. Jake then follows the teenaged Eddie to the haunted mansion where Jake is able to cross from Earth to Roland's world.
