John Cannaday Shottum had a huge interest in science during the 1870-1880s. As a result, he purchased a cabinet of curiosities from a man who had passed away and created a small museum of his own out of the items. He was a member of the Lyceum and often contacted his friends through that organization to assist in identifying his newest acquisitions. Early in the 1870s, he found need of a curator so hired Leng for the job. In exchange, he would allow Yeng use of his third floor. When Shottum later became suspicious of Leng's activities, he investigated the lab and found nothing. In the basement, however, Shottum discovered that Leng was experimenting on live human beings. Leng killed Shottum and burned down the shop before he could expose him.
