He was born during the Thirty Year's War between Catholics and Protestants that was settled by the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. Comenius attended school in Uhersky Brod, a town in Moravia and the universities of Herborn and Heidelberg. He returned to Moravia in 1616 to be ordained minister of Brethren and became pastor and school principal of Fulnek two years later. In war years 1620 to 1627 and later, he was persecuted.
