Who is Jigana from Say You're One of Them and what is their importance?

Eight-year-old, Jigana, is the narrator of the story "Ex-Mas Feast." Raised in the slums of Kenya, Jigana is believed to be the only hope for his family's future. His sister, Maisha, has taken a full-time job in a brothel to help pay for his education. When he learns of her sacrifice, he destroys his school supplies and runs away from home.
