Jerry Garrett is Rachael's husband. He has an itinerant childhood: his mother is ill and poor, and his father left them with little to nothing. He is the grandson of May Bell, the town prostitute, whose real name is Christine Pintor, and his mother is searching for her for help. Rachael invites him over to the ranch for dinner and Shay is shocked to see her father as a child. She tells May Bell that he is in town and wants her to support them. Jerry and Rachael discover Tom Pemberthy's body in the cave, and Jerry eventually leaves town for the army. He feels needed by no one after his mother dies. When he sees Rachael again at the GI party he tries to stop himself from seeing her but cannot. He later feels needed by Shay for a while, but eventually realizes that Rachael loves her house more than she loves him. He retreats to his cabin, on the same grounds at Corbin Strock's old cabin, and only returns to the Gingerbread House after Rachael's breakdown.
