Jennie Bradford is Maggie's daughter. She is only three when her mother hides under the porch to stop her first husband from beating the two of them to death. Maggie's husband, however, finds them and fires a shot at them with his gun. Maggie retaliates with three shots of her own, killing Philip. Because Jennie is badly beaten when the police find them, Maggie's story of domestic violence is accepted, and Maggie is not charged with Philip's murder.

Jennie and Maggie relocate to New York, where they remain best friends. Jennie is her mother's inspiration, a reason to begin a new life. As a teenager, Jennie begins having trouble in school, an event that corresponds with Maggie's recent marriage to Will. When Will appears in Jennie's bedroom one night, Maggie comes to believe that Will is sexually abusing her daughter. Jennie later admits to Maggie that she never had a sexual relationship with Will Shepard. She also testifies to this in court.
