Jeanne Prosperi, Adeline's stepmother, is called Niang by all the children. "Niang" is a word for mother. Prosperi is described as a self-centered woman, who despises Joseph's children by his first marriage. After their marriage, she takes over the household and rules with an iron fist. She even refuses to give Joseph's father and sister spending money. She Over time, Niang moves all of Joseph's assets into her own name and refuses to give any to the children.
