Jean-Paul Sartre was born in France in 1905. His father died while he was still an infant, and he was educated at the best schools in France. A avid reader, Sartre went into become a teacher at Le Havre. He was a POW in World War II, and after his release, he secured a teaching position in Paris where he became famous for his plays and philosophy of individualism. Satre died on April 15, 1980, leaving his entire estate to his adopted daughter Arlette.
