Jean Park grew up in San Joaquin Valley. Her father lost his job with Standard Oil Company because he was Oriental. Her mother supported the Korean independence movement. The family later opened a chicken farm, which was vandalized, after which, the family often relocated. In the end, her father committed suicide.
