Jane Sharp is the midwife in a small medieval village. She takes Beetle in as an apprentice and proves to be a strong task-master, who is demanding, unappreciative, and selfish. Jane does not teach Alyce the duties of a midwife, but rather, guards her secrets closely.

Often abusive and cruel, Jane doesn't seem to single Alyce out for her abuse. She is equally mean to everyone. Her demeanor is callous and demanding, whether she is dealing with her apprentice or a laboring mother-to-be. Sharp also demands payment before rendering her services.
