Jade Snow, born in America, was the daughter of a garment factory owner in San Francisco's Chinatown. When she was eight-years-old, Jade was enrolled in Chinese evening school. When her younger brother was born, Jade became aware of the gender inequality in the Chinese culture. Her brother was treated differently, given privileges she was not. As a result, Jade opted for an American education, and later became a writer. She also opened a ceramics shop.
