Irem is the 15-year-old daughter of Sinan and Nilufer and she has the role of the secondary protagonist in the novel. Irem comes from a very conservative Kurdish family who practices Islam. Though they are not as strict as fundamentalists, Irem is required to stay in the home with her mother, helping with chores and must keep her hair covered by a scarf at all times.
