Iqbal Singh is an atheist, who was raised Sikh. Educated in England, he returned to India to work as a social worker for the People's Party of India. Singh saw himself as a potentially great social reformer and man of the people, but he also expected special treatment because of his education.

Iqbal was imprisoned alongside Jugga because it was believed that he was involved in Lal's murder. He was outraged over his imprisonment, but through this experience he came to interact positively with Jugga, and he believed the imprisonment would give him credibility as a leader and raise his public profile.
