Yoshiko's mother, Iku Uchida, is an Issei and a Christian. She comes to the United States to be married. Iku possesses many traits of a traditional Japanese wife. She is reserved, stoic, soft and kind, and she loves nature. Iku's mother takes charge of her daughters' education and cares for her home and community. She is distraught when Dwight is taken away by the FBI.
