To put it simply, Horst Von Epp is the quintessential opportunist. He is a well educated and cultured German, who is placed in the position of controlling the news that leaves Warsaw bound for world readership. Although, he finds the Nazi behaviors distasteful and crass, he accepts them. He believes that the winning side can do whatever it wants, and in the long run, his future well-being depends upon a show of loyalty to the Nazi leadership. Over the course of the novel, Epp and De Monti develop a mutually respectful relationship. Epp assists Chris in getting access to the ghetto, so that he can avoid discovery after the Nazis realize he has secreted out material that is damaging to them.
