Sonny's father, Homer Sr. is the Coalwood mine superintendent. A company man, who lacks a college degree, and was originally a common miner, Homer Sr. is consumed by his duties at the mine and works nearly constantly. He is so dedicated to the mine that he works double shifts when he is thirty-eight. When his mine or men are in trouble, he cannot be kept from the mine. Sonny strives to get his attention, appreciation and affection, but can't manage to do so. Homer Sr. favors his older son, Jim, who is a football star, and is the president of the Big Creek Football Fathers' Association. Homer survives colon cancer and, while Sonny is in high school, develops a spot on his lung.
