Hikoshiro is Musui's older half-brother. He is described as a respectable, civic-minded, virtuous man. Musui sometimes aspires to be like his brother, but he can never quite manage it. Hikoshiro works for the government, collecting taxes from peasants and settling disputes. He does not approve of Musui's laziness, thievery, and deception, and even builds a cage to imprison Musui when he is tired of his antics. Musui credits the cage building as a result of Saburoemon's lies about him. It is, however, clear Musui deserves punishment.
