Herman is a successful accountant and Ernestine's beloved in the stories, Oxtiern and Ernestine. Herman is framed by Oxtiern and Madame Scholtz in the story. In the play version, Herman is freed..... he kills Oxtiern. In the story version, he is executed outside Oxtiern's window while Oxtiern is raping Ernestine.
