Henry Vidal is the acting second lieutenant on Surprise. He is a master mariner and belongs to a religious group known as the Knipperdollings. The Knipperdollings faith believe in an egalitarian and free society, thus, Vidal is easily swayed by Dutourd's constant philosophizing. Vidal is a shrewd seaman, but his appointment was largely a response to the many vacancies that were created by combat or detached duty. His smuggling of Dutourd from the Surprise into Peru, however, led to his dismissal.
