Henry Kalama was Rachel's father. He remained devoted to his daughter throughout his life, and for most of the novel, he is Rachel's only contact with her family. As a sailor, Henry is away for months at a time. When he is home, however, he makes the most of his time with his family by taking them on numerous outings around the island. When Rachel was sent to Kalaupapa, Henry frequently wrote her and sent packages. He also visited Rachel on Kalaupapa whenever possible.
