Henry Chester appears in the story, Sanatorium. He is a middle-aged business man, who contracts tuberculosis. Although it is obvious to everyone that Chester loves his wife, over time, he becomes unhappy when she visits him in the hospital. Chester later requests that his doctor tell his wife that she isn't to come back to the hospital any longer. Chester then tells Ashenden that he asked the doctor to do so because he was beginning to hate her. Angry at his own circumstances. Chester knows that he will likely die while she is well. In the story's conclusion, Chester and his wife put their differences behind them and realize they do still love each other despite Chester's illness.
