Who is Hastings Harcourt from The Man Who Listens to Horses and what is their importance?

Millionaire, Hastings Harcourt, finances Monty's training facility. Unfortunately, Harcourt is bipolar, an illness causes him to attempt to destroy and dissemble the training facility shortly after its completion. We later learn that Harcourt dies, leaving Monty with ownership of the facility.
