Gustav belongs to the British Secret Service and works as a spy. He writes excellent reports, but it soon becomes obvious that he isn't actually going to Germany to collect his information. Ashenden is sent to Gustav's home in order to determine if he is really doing his own work or not, and while there, he convinces Gustav to tell him the truth. In that he is not really going into Germany, only getting information by word of mouth. In order to keep himself out of trouble, Gustav shares important information about Grantley Caypor, a man who is believed to be an English traitor.
