Who is Grocery Store Clerk from Afternoon of the Elves and what is their importance?

The grocery store clerk is a very minor character in the novel. Hillary successfully dupes the clerk when she pretends to return a package of bologna to its cold case. The bologna, however, never makes it into the case...... but rather finds its way into her pocket.
