Who is Grandfather from What Have You Lost? and what is their importance?

The author's Grandfather promised him that his hair would grow back after his first crew cut when he was five. He unwrapped candy for them both and told his grandson, "these woods are yours. They were mine, but I give them to you. I am old, and it is only right they should now belong to you" (p. 43).
