Gottfried Leibniz was Newton's contemporary. The two men simultaneously developed calculus but used different methods of calculation. Leibniz's method was more precise and analytical. The differences between their approaches would continue to divide continental and English mathematicians until Hardy attempted to convert the English to Leibniz's method.
