Gikonyo is a carpenter. After his father kicks them out of their home, Gikonyo becomes responsible for caring for his mother. He loves working with wood, and he is an expert craftsman. Gikonyo falls in love with Mumbi, and she falls in love with him as well. The couple marries, but shortly after, Gikonyo is taken prisoner by government guards.

He is held in several concentration camps and almost loses his mind. Gikonyo misses his wife more than anything and longs for home and family. Because of this, he is the first in the camp to confess that he has taken the Movement's oath. This decision later plagues him with guilt.

When Gikonyo returns home, he learns that Mumbi has had a child by another man. As a result, he pulls away from her rather then try to re-establish their relationship. In the end, he drives her from their home, immediately regretting his action.
