Gatu is imprisoned in the same detention camp as Gikonyo. He is described as a funny man, who is always joking..... who actively strives to keep up the prisoners' hopes. Over the course of the novel, we learn that Gatu has taken his own life. Before killing himself, he confesses to Gikonyo that he lost the only woman he ever loved by putting off their marriage.
