Franz Koenig was a man of ethnic German descent. He always hated Paul Bronski, as he felt that he should have been the man selected as Dean of the medical school at the University of Warsaw. When the Nazis took control, Koenig immediately obtained membership in the Party and focused on humiliating Paul Bronski, who returned from battle with one arm amputated. Koenig is later given an important post in the Nazi administration of Warsaw, which he used to commandeer Bronski's home for his own.
