Francesca Ferro is an Italian tour guide and language tutor. She lives in Bologna, where she is hired to help Marco Lazzeri learn Italian. During their time together, Marco finds himself drawn to Francesca romantically. When he learns that her husband is dying, Marco is drawn even closer to her. Eventually, Marco decides to leave Italy and turns to Francesca for help. She gives Marco her husband's passport, which enables him to travel to Washington, where he parts with the one piece of evidence that could end his life.
