Ferencz and the other men of the regiment are Hofmiller's fellow soldiers. Over the course of the novel, we see that it is what these men think about Hofmiller that has the greatest effect on him. The things they say make Hofmiller aware of the things he will hear about himself if his affair with Edith is exposed. Ferencz, however, proves himself to be a good friend, as he attempts to guide Hofmiller in a caring and concerned manner.
