The family group (mbari) is the primary factor in the life of the Gikuyu. The mbari consists of the father, mother, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. This family group rapidly grows because of the Gikuyu's polygamous way of life. The mbari is a vital part of the Gikuyu. It provides land, education, shelter, and the unity that is necessary for tribal ritual.
