Fake Ploeg's son, who had the same name, was one of Anton's classmates. Anton remembers Fake as being as cruel as his father, but he also notes that Fake appeared to be a victim of his father's cruelty. When Fake arrived at school one day in a Nazi Youth uniform, Anton backed him up by walking into the classroom to sit with him despite the teacher's refusal to enter the room until he took off the uniform. Fake never forgot this kindness.
In 1956, Anton and Fake met again. He told Anton how difficult things had been after his father's death. He continued to believe his father innocent of the crimes the Resistance accused him of, clinging to the child's ideal of a beloved parent.
