In the 1870s, Enoch Leng, a scientist, had a laboratory above the Shottum's Cabinet of Natural Productions and Curiosities. While working there, he kidnapped numerous children to use in his experimentation...... Leng was attempting to find a way to prolong his life. The shop owner eventually became aware of what Leng was doing, but Leng killed him and burned the shop to the ground before he could tell the authorities. When the site is later excavated in order to erect a new building, the victims were discovered, leading Smithback to write a long and detailed account for the New York Times. In the end, it is discovered that Leng was actually Antoine Leng Pendergast..... our protagonist's great-uncle.
