Emily is Philomene and Narcisse Fredieu's daughter. She is the first member of the family to be in a situation in which she can spoiled to some degree. Although her life is filled with hard work, Emily is less troubled and treated far better than her mother and grandmother had ever been. She learned to read and write, and was sent away to New Orleans to a convent school by Narcisse. Emile was light-skinned and had children with a light-skinned man, which further "bleached' the line. Emily is described as strong-willed and proud.
