Elton Crider is a professor at the local university. Milo learns that Elton and Raymond had a homosexual affair several months before Raymond's death. Milo goes to speak to Elton at Nickie's hotel and learns that Raymond liked to practice quick draws with his antique guns. Elton has little other information to share with Milo except for a lover's opinion of Raymond. After Milo speaks to Elton, he is found dead in the river. Milo suspects that Elton might have committed suicide over the loss of Raymond, but Elton's wife believes he was murdered. The fact that Elton was last seen in Nickie's bar leads the reader to suspect Nickie killed him in a panic about what he might know regarding Raymond and the drugs.
