Elizabeth Lawler is a little girl, about seven years old. Jayber noticed her because her clothing didn't fit and because she was so quiet.... almost resigned. Elizabeth stood back while the other children played and became known as "E". For Jayber, Elizabeth represented the namelessness that each orphan falls into, the moment they become little less than a number, and their only family becomes others who are known by an initial.
