Elias Elizondo is described as a verbally gifted child, who grew up in an awful home. As a result, he was quickly absorbed into gang life. Elias' poems are included throughout the book. Elias receives harsh treatment by the juvenile justice system, and he winds up in the CYA. Although, Sister Janet is his greatest advocate, there is nothing she can do when a fight breaks out in the CYA, and Elias is identified as the culprit. In the end, Elias was shipped off to an adult penitentiary. Humes considered Elias one of the boys for whom the system failed.
