El Mudo, which is Spanish for "The Deaf One", is a young man that Lou Ann interpreted for in the court system. She uses his case as an example of the fact that the justice system is poorly equipped to handle the deaf. The young man had been duped by his friends into driving a getaway car during a robbery and was later sentenced to several years in prison.
