Englishman, Edward Shelton, serves aboard an American whaler that is captured by Aubrey. He joined the American ship before the outbreak of war between America and England. Shelton is familiar with Aubrey's reputation, and after being brought aboard the Surprise, he volunteers for service. It is Shelton who informs Aubrey that a French privateer is in the area.
