Eduard von Bertrand is the young man against his parents wishes rejected a position in the miltary and went into business (trade). As a successful cotton importer, Eduard begins looking for a wife, and is smitten with Elisabeth immediately. Unfortunately, he isn't captivated by her womanly charms, but rather, her resemblance to a young boy. Bertrand never marries, in the end, takes his own life.
